We currently raise two breeds of ducks. Magpie ducks are a dual-purpose breed that was developed in the United Kingdom as both a meat breed and an egg layer. Indian Runners look like walking wine bottles and are superb egg layers. There are also two Toulouse geese that live with the ducks and provide natural predator control. The ducks have served several purposes on the farm: they produce large, free-range eggs that we sell by the dozen. Duck eggs can be used just like chicken eggs and are unsurpassed for baking. We also use the ducks as “sheep stand-ins” for herding demonstrations with our border collies, as well as for training the dogs.
